Scanner Install and Test SOP

Scanner Install and Test SOP

Steps to initial install:

  1. Unbox a new Epson scanner and remove all protective tape from the automatic document feeder and output tray.
  2. Plug in the supplied AC power cable and connect the USB cable to an available port on the target computer.
  3. Power up the scanner and locate the folder named “PC Tech” containing all necessary drivers (including those for Epson Scanners).
  4. Prior to installation, check to make sure there are no other conflicting scanner drivers leftover from a previous scanner install (if so, remove them).
  5. Double-click the Epson installation file and follow the prompts.
  6. To perform a test scan, open the input and output trays on the scanner and place a document in the edge guides with the top edge first and the printed side facing down.

  1. From the Open Dental main menu, highlight the Images module.

  1. Click Scan Document or Scan Multi-Page Document. The Select Source window will show.
  2. Select your scanner, then click Select. The Scanner Options window will show.
  3. Click Scan and verify the image in the preview window.

Steps to resolving scanning trouble:

  1. If a client reports that their scanner is not connecting, first log the local user off.
  2. After logging into an admin account, from the Open Dental main menu select

Setup > Images > Image Quality

  1. In the Imaging Quality window, click Set Default Scanner.

  1. In the Select Source window, change the scanner from what it is currently set to back to TSScan. This is where the settings change and it could be set to any random selection. Only admin accounts can access this.

  1. Log out of the admin account and have the user verify the changes.

Additional things to look at:

  1. In the TSScan window, check to make sure the correct scanner is selected.

  1. Check the Scan Engine field.

  • If the client is using an Epson DS510 or DS520, set the scan Engine to V2.0.
  • If the client is using an Epson DS530, set the scan Engine to V2.5.

  1. See if multiple users are logged into the machine via Task Manager and remove any unwanted entries.
  1. Using an incorrect version of the Epson DS530 driver can cause it to get hung up in a background process and stop responding. To resolve:
  • Unplug the scanner’s USB cable from the PC
  • Uninstall all Epson software and drivers via the Control Panel
  • Restart the PC
  • Install the correct Epson DS530 drivers from the “PC Tech” folder
  • Reconnect the USB cable and perform a test scan
